Questions and Answers

How much water does the grass need?
Water is the most critical ingredient to your sod’s success. Water
sod until the water penetrates through sod into the soil. If soil is dry
then you will have to keep water moving throughout the yard to make sure
all areas stay wet. Lift the edges of several pieces to make sure the
soil is wet. You may have to water several areas at the same time. Do
not allow sod to dry out and go backwards after installation. After you
have gotten all areas wet then continue this program for 4-5 days are
until sod roots start to penetrate the soil. Once this happens you can
back off to 2-3 times a week one a time a day for all of yard. (Everyday
if sod is installed in the hottest time of the year or after
temperatures get over 90 degrees.)
How high should I maintain my grass?
During establishment of the grass the best heights for cool season
grass is 2 ½ - 3 1/2 inches and warm season should be 1 ½ - 2 inches.
After establishment cool season is best between 2-5 inches. (Summer
months are best at the higher height)
Which grass is best suited for me?
All grasses are good and better. If you are willing to spend time,
energy and money then maybe a cool season grass is your choice. Cool
season grass is great about nine months of the year in Middle Tennessee
and it stays green all year. However if you do not assist the grass in
the stress of summer, this grass will thin and possibly die, thus
needing to overseed and renovate in the fall. (Call us for this program
if needed) Warm season grasses tend to need less help after
establishment, the down side is they are going to go dormant in the late
fall and not green up until April in this area. You can overseed your
lawn for winter or paint, if you want green grass. If you do not
overseed, then you will need to spray a non-selective herbicide in late
January until mid February as this is the time that weeds will be more
visible because your lawn is not green. Believe me, the weeds can be in
your cool season grass, but you don’t notice them because your yard is
green. (Contact us about a weed program)
Can I walk on the sod after installation?
You can walk on any grass after sodding, however you will need to
watch traffic or mowers for shifting until the grass starts to root.
What about the sod seams?
All sod seams will disappear over time after you start mowing the
grass. Watch for weeds coming in the seams. Weed seeds are present in
all non-sterilized soil that has been disturbed. They are brought in or
already in the existing soil.
How can I prevent weeds?
After the sod is installed, you may place a pre-emergent herbicide to
control certain weeds. (Contact us about a program for weeds)
Should I roll the sod after installation?
You don’t have to roll the grass as it will eventually conform to the
yards prepared contours. Mowing and walking can actually speed the
leveling process, however rolling will never hurt. We do not provide
this service.
How long before I can mow my grass?
Usually within 10-14 days. See above… until mower will not pick up
pieces.
How long does it take to install the grass?
If you install it, a good rule of thumb is one pallet per person per
hour. We can do this in half the time.
How many square feet per pallet?
500 square feet to a pallet of cool season sod and Bermuda sod. 450
square feet on a pallet of Zoysia sod.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
Normally around 2,500 pounds, we have seen it weigh more when the
grass is wet after a rain or irrigation cycle.
What time of year should I sod my yard?
All grasses can be planted year round, however the best time for a
cool season sod is September until June and a warm season sod is April
until October. Cool season will need more attention from June until
Middle September and warm season does not produce roots after late
October until April and there is always the chance of low temperature
loss if we have a real cold winter.
What is the difference in Meyer Zoysia and Empire Zoysia?
Meyer Zoysia has been around for years and is a great grass for
someone who wants a finer leaf and is slow growing. Meyer typically
likes to be mowed at 2 inches or lower. Meyer can get a little thatch if
not careful. This can lead to other issues down the road. (Hey,
don’t worry; all grasses have good and bad.) Empire has a bigger
leaf blade than Meyer and has a little faster growth rate. Empire can
withstand higher heights of cut and tolerates herbicides better
Do I need to fertilize my sod after installation?
Yes, however this can vary on when you sod and what kind of
fertilizer you should use, along with how much you should use. (Contact
our lawn care department for a season or individual program)
